Short answer. Star Wars' desert planet Tatooine was largely filmed in Tunisia: at Matmata for Luke Skywalker's home, around Nefta and Chott el Djerid, on Djerba, and later in the ksour of Ouled Soltane and Hadada for The Phantom Menace. These places are far from towns, and the mobile network there is thin: in the open data we analysed, no Orange Tunisie 4G cell is recorded within 10 km of Matmata or of the two ksour. Plan your visit with that in mind.
The filming locations
George Lucas's designers scouted Morocco and Tunisia and chose Tunisia for its desert landscape and Djerba's architecture. Filming began on 22 March 1976 and was disrupted by the region's first heavy rain in seven years. The planet takes its name from the town of Tataouine, which was not itself a filming location. The crews came back in 1997 and 1998 for the prequels.
- Matmata: the underground Hotel Sidi Idriss was the Lars homestead, home of Luke's uncle and aunt, in A New Hope.
- Nefta and Chott el Djerid: the salt lake completed the moisture farm; dunes near Nefta were the landing site of C-3PO and R2-D2's escape pod.
- Djerba: Mos Eisley exteriors, with the cantina filmed at Ajim according to Wikipedia.
- Ksar Ouled Soltane: a fortified granary near Tataouine, used for the Mos Espa slave quarters where young Anakin lived.
- Ksar Hadada: Mos Espa, filmed in June 1997 for The Phantom Menace.
- Onk Jemal, near Tozeur: another Tatooine set for the prequels.
The mobile network at each site
We counted the 4G cells recorded within 10 km of each place in Mozilla Location Service's open export (volunteer readings from 2016 to 2024, mostly before 2021):
| Place | Scene | Orange Tunisie | Tunisie Telecom | Ooredoo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matmata (Hotel Sidi Idriss) | Lars homestead, A New Hope (1976) | 0 | 0 | 3 |
| Ksar Ouled Soltane | Mos Espa slave quarters, The Phantom Menace | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Ksar Hadada | Mos Espa, The Phantom Menace (filmed 1997) | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Nefta and Chott el Djerid | Lars homestead, droid landing dunes | 1 | 3 | 0 |
| Tozeur (town) | Base for Onk Jemal and Chott el Djerid | 16 | 0 | 18 |
| Ajim (Djerba) | Mos Eisley cantina, A New Hope | 13 | 8 | 3 |
These are not coverage maps: a zero means nobody recorded a 4G cell there in this data, not that there is no signal at all. Around Ksar Hadada some 2G or 3G cells were recorded (5 on Orange); around Ksar Ouled Soltane, none on Orange. The contrast with Tozeur or Djerba is clear.
Planning the visit
- Download offline maps of the area before you leave Tozeur, Djerba or Tataouine.
- Send your route to someone before you set off, and check in when you are back in signal.
- Take a guide or an organised trip for the desert tracks: the British government advises against travel near the Libyan border and parts of the south, so check its regional advice.
- Keep battery: a phone searching for a network drains fast.
Our eSIM runs on the Orange Tunisie network wherever the operator has signal: it keeps you connected in the base towns and on the road, not in the middle of the dunes. It costs โฌ15.90 for 5 days or โฌ21.90 for 7 days, with 1 GB a day at full 4G speed then 512 kbps.
