Short answer. When the eSIM has signal but no internet, our supplier says the most likely cause is data roaming switched off on the eSIM line. Next comes the line chosen for mobile data, still pointing at your usual SIM, then the access point name (APN). Check these three settings in that order.
1. Data roaming, on the eSIM line
A travel eSIM works by roaming: without this setting, it connects to the network but gets no data.
- iPhone: Settings, Mobile Service, tap the eSIM line, turn on "Data Roaming".
- Samsung: Settings, Connections, Mobile networks, turn on "Data roaming".
- Pixel: Settings, Network and internet, SIMs, tap the eSIM, turn on "Roaming".
Our supplier advises turning roaming on for the eSIM and off on other lines, so that data goes through the eSIM. It also avoids roaming charges from your usual network.
2. The line used for data
A dual-SIM phone uses only one line for data at a time. If that is your usual SIM, the eSIM can be connected and still nothing goes through it.
- iPhone: Settings, Mobile Service, "Mobile Data": choose the eSIM line. Turn off "Allow Mobile Data Switching".
- Samsung: SIM manager, "Mobile data": choose the eSIM.
- Pixel: Network and internet, SIMs, "Mobile data": choose the eSIM. Google notes that only one SIM can be the default for data.
Also check that mobile data is on at all, and that no extreme data-saving mode is cutting apps in the background.
3. The access point name (APN)
Our supplier says the APN on its eSIMs is automatic and normally needs no setting. If roaming is on and nothing goes through, check it is there:
- iPhone: Settings, Mobile Service, the eSIM line, Mobile Data Network. In the mobile data APN field, type data.esim.
- Android: Settings, Network and internet (or Connections), Mobile networks, Access Point Names. Add an APN with data.esim and save.
Leave the other fields blank. This value is for our plans; for an eSIM bought elsewhere, use only the APN its seller gives you. A wrong APN typed by hand blocks data or slows it down.
The "PDP authentication failure" message
On some Android phones this message comes with the lack of internet. Our supplier lists three causes: a plan with no valid data left, a wrong APN, or a connection to a network the eSIM may not use. If all of that is right, it advises resetting network settings, then restarting.
Still nothing?
- Airplane Mode for ten seconds, then off.
- Pick the network by hand: Orange Tunisie for our plans (see eSIM shows No Service or SOS).
- Turn off any VPN or firewall app, which can block mobile data.
- Check the plan has not reached its end date.
Internet works, but slowly? That is not a fault: see slow eSIM in Tunisia. The full list of checks is in eSIM not working in Tunisia.
Our eSIM runs on the Orange Tunisie network: 1 GB a day at full 4G speed, then 512 kbps until the next day, hotspot included, QR code by email, plan starting at your first connection in Tunisia. See the plans.
