Hotspot in Tunisia with a travel eSIM

Hotspot is included on every one of our plans: you can share the eSIM's connection with a laptop or a companion's phone. How to set it up on iPhone and Android, the fix when it refuses to start, and how fast shared data uses up the daily full-speed amount.

Short answer: yes. Hotspot is included on every eSIM Tunisie plan, whatever its length, with no separate limit: shared data counts in the same daily amount as the phone's own. It is switched on like any hotspot; when it refuses to start on an older iPhone, one APN setting usually fixes it. Whether a particular phone can share a connection also depends on the phone itself.

What sellers say about hotspot

Switch it on: iPhone

  1. Make sure mobile data is set to the eSIM line and that the line has a working connection.
  2. Settings, Personal Hotspot, โ€œAllow Others to Joinโ€.
  3. Set a password, then join from the other device as you would any Wi-Fi network.

Switch it on: Android

  1. Samsung: Settings, Connections, Mobile Hotspot and Tethering, Mobile Hotspot.
  2. Pixel: Settings, Network and internet, Hotspot and tethering, Wi-Fi hotspot.
  3. Check that the hotspot uses the eSIM line for data.

If the hotspot will not start

On some older versions of iOS the Personal Hotspot menu is missing or greyed out with a travel eSIM. Our supplier's documentation gives the fix for our plans: in the mobile data network settings of the eSIM line, find the Personal Hotspot section and enter data.esim as the APN, leaving the username and password empty. Then restart the phone. For another seller's eSIM, ask that seller for its own value: a wrong APN blocks data.

If the phone itself has no data, the hotspot cannot work either. Fix that first: eSIM not working in Tunisia.

What sharing does to the daily amount

Our plans give 1 GB a day at full 4G speed, then 512 kbps until the next day. A laptop uses data far faster than a phone: cloud sync, software updates and video calls can go through a gigabyte in well under an hour. Once the speed drops, 512 kbps shared between two devices is slow for both.

What 512 kbps still allows.

Sharing with a phone that has no eSIM

This is the most common reason to tether: one phone in the group is not compatible. It works for messages, maps and browsing on the second phone, within the limits above, as long as the two stay within Wi-Fi range of each other. To see which phones can take their own eSIM: Samsung and Pixel models to check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a Tunisia eSIM as a hotspot?

Yes. Hotspot is included on every eSIM Tunisie plan, and shared data counts in the same daily amount as the phone's own. Holafly's Tunisia page allows a limited amount of shared data per day.

Why is Personal Hotspot greyed out with my eSIM?

On some older iOS versions the hotspot needs its own APN. For an eSIM Tunisie plan, our supplier's documentation says to enter data.esim in the Personal Hotspot APN, with username and password empty, then restart.

Does hotspot data count in the daily limit?

Yes. Shared data comes out of the same daily amount: 1 GB a day at full speed on our plans, then 512 kbps for the phone and for every device connected to it.

Can a laptop work on a travel eSIM hotspot?

For email and browsing, yes. Pause cloud sync and updates first: a laptop can use a gigabyte in under an hour, and after that the connection is slow.

Can I share my eSIM with a friend whose phone has no eSIM?

Yes, through the hotspot, within the same limits. If both of you need data all day and both phones are compatible, an eSIM each works better.
