Short answer. Tunis is the best-equipped part of the country for mobile masts, and all three operators are there. The real question is the first hour: at Tunis-Carthage airport a local SIM needs your passport and an open counter, while an eSIM installed before you leave works as soon as you switch your phone back on. Here is how to get online at the airport, in the medina, at Carthage and at Sidi Bou Said.
Landing at Tunis-Carthage
Tunis-Carthage International Airport lies eight kilometres north-east of Tunis. It is the airport for the capital, Carthage, La Marsa and Sidi Bou Said. For a local SIM you need your passport: since 2024 a line is only activated once it is linked to a valid identity document. We found no official list of the counters open in the arrivals hall or of their hours. If you land late, an operator's shop in town the next day is the safer plan.
On its website Orange Tunisie lists its SIM DATA at 3.8 TND for 400 MB over 7 days, 16.15 TND for 6 GB and 30.4 TND for 25 GB over 30 days (read on 15 October 2026). The dinar cannot be bought before you travel: withdraw or change money when you arrive.
The network in Tunis, in numbers
In Mozilla Location Service's open data (volunteer readings from 2016 to 2024), these are the 4G cells recorded within 10 km of two points:
| Place | Orange Tunisie | Tunisie Telecom | Ooredoo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tunis-Carthage airport | 1189 | 1088 | 1402 |
| Sidi Bou Said | 432 | 292 | 450 |
This is an order of magnitude, not a coverage map, but the gap with the south of the country is clear: around Tunis each operator has hundreds of recorded 4G cells, against a few dozen on Djerba and sometimes none in desert villages.
In the medina, at Carthage and at Sidi Bou Said
- The medina of Tunis: narrow lanes and thick walls. The signal can drop inside the souks; download the offline map of the area before you go in, so you can find your way out without a network.
- Carthage: the archaeological sites are spread over several kilometres. Data is mostly for getting from one site to the next and checking opening hours.
- Sidi Bou Said: the village is reached from Tunis on the TGM train line, which runs to La Marsa.
Hotel and cafรฉ Wi-Fi helps, but it stops at the door: for a taxi, a map or a message on the move you need mobile data.
The eSIM for Tunis
Our eSIM uses the Orange Tunisie network. Install it at home; the plan only starts at your first connection in Tunisia. When you arrive, switch on mobile data and data roaming for the eSIM line. Every plan gives 1 GB a day at full 4G speed, then 512 kbps until the next day: enough for a weekend of sightseeing, maps and messages. It costs โฌ14.90 for 3 days, โฌ15.90 for 5 days or โฌ21.90 for 7 days. No Tunisian number: calls stay on your usual line (see Tunisia eSIM with a phone number and calls).
Our advice
For a short stay in Tunis, the eSIM saves the first hour and the hunt for a counter. For a long stay with a lot of video, a local SIM bought in a shop costs less per gigabyte. The other airports are compared in Tunisia SIM card at the airport or an eSIM?.

Free Wi-Fi at Tunis-Carthage airport
According to a statement by Tunisia's airports authority (OACA), reported by the Tunisian press on 7 May 2025, Tunis-Carthage airport offers free Wi-Fi. We could not check its speed or sign-in conditions on site. It is enough to install an eSIM on arrival, message home or book a taxi; as on any public Wi-Fi, avoid banking on it.
