Short answer. Tunisia has had 5G since February 2025, on all three operators. According to Opensignal's September 2026 report, Ooredoo is fastest at 167.5 Mbps on 5G, Tunisie Telecom finds a 5G signal most often, and 5G coverage is still low everywhere: 1.2 out of 10 at best. For a holiday, 4G is plenty.
When 5G arrived in Tunisia
Licences were awarded in November 2024 and the commercial launch came on 14 February 2025 at Ooredoo, Orange and Tunisie Telecom. Orange reported 400 5G sites at the time. More than a year and a half on, Opensignal shows what users actually get, for the period from 1 April to 29 June 2026.
The 5G figures, operator by operator
| 5G measure | Ooredoo | Tunisie Telecom | Orange |
|---|---|---|---|
| Download speed | 167.5 Mbps | 151.1 Mbps | 90.3 Mbps |
| Upload speed | 23.3 Mbps | 19.5 Mbps | 17.3 Mbps |
| Availability (% of time) | 52.0% | 58.3% | 47.3% |
| Coverage (out of 10) | 1.2 | 1.0 | 0.7 |
| Video (out of 100) | 71.3 | 74.1 | 73.0 |
Availability is the share of time a user with a 5G phone and a 5G subscription detects a 5G signal. It does not cover every customer.

5G or 4G: the real gap
On average, across all network types, everyday speed is far lower than on 5G. Users spend most of their time off 5G.
| Operator | Speed on 5G | Average speed, all networks |
|---|---|---|
| Ooredoo | 167.5 Mbps | 28.0 Mbps |
| Tunisie Telecom | 151.1 Mbps | 23.3 Mbps |
| Orange | 90.3 Mbps | 20.1 Mbps |
On the Ookla Speedtest Global Index for September 2026, Tunisia's median mobile download speed is 49.01 Mbps, 80th in the world. The methods differ: Ookla counts tests people choose to run, Opensignal everyday use. Our post on mobile internet speed in Tunisia also gives nPerf's 2025 results.
Do you need 5G for a trip to Tunisia?
No, in the great majority of cases. What travellers do on a phone does not need those speeds.
| What you do | Is 4G enough? |
|---|---|
| Google Maps, Bolt, Yassir | Yes |
| WhatsApp, messages, photos | Yes |
| Video call | Yes, where the signal is good |
| Streaming video | Yes, within your plan's limits |
| Downloading large files | 5G helps, if you are in a covered area |
5G also needs a compatible phone and a plan that includes it. With coverage of 0.7 to 1.2 out of 10, it should not decide your choice for a stay in Djerba, Hammamet or Tozeur.
What changes your experience most on the ground is how steady the connection is. Opensignal tracks this as consistent quality, the share of tests good enough for demanding use: 63.9% on Ooredoo, 57.7% on Tunisie Telecom and 56.4% on Orange. Those figures cover all network types, not only 5G. In a beach resort at peak season, the number of people connected in one place often matters more than the label next to your signal bars.
What about a travel eSIM?
Our plans do not include 5G. If you must have 5G, you need a local offer that includes it: see our comparison of Orange, Ooredoo and Tunisie Telecom for tourists.
Our Tunisia eSIM runs on 4G LTE on the Orange Tunisie network, with 1 GB a day at full speed then 512 Kbps until the next day, hotspot included. The 7-day plan costs โฌ21.90 and the 10-day plan โฌ29. It starts at your first connection in Tunisia, so install it at home on Wi-Fi, after checking that your phone is eSIM compatible.
